PERIOD EIGHT - Science 8
Atoms, Elements and Symbols / Elements Project
It is expected that students will:
- use a kinetic particle model to describe the structure and properties of various states of matter
- categorize a selection of materials as elements, compounds, or mixtures
- assess the properties of materials in terms of their effectiveness for particular uses
- relate the derivation of the symbols to the names of the elements
- give examples to show that the elements are grouped on the periodic table according to similar properties
Watch demo of Lead Nitrate and Potassium Iodide.
If not finished, do activity 7G in Science Probe 8. You must come up with a procedure BEFORE you can start the experiment.
Do the Lesson 19 Lab - Reactions of Compounds in Solution. This is a hand out.
Read page 132-135 Science Probe 8 - Section 6.1 Elements and Compounds. Define element, atom, compound, molecule.
Do questions 1-5 from Review 6.1 on page 153 of Science Probe 8.
Look at colour overheads of Atoms & Molecules, and Elements & Compounds. You are not required to know the 'sub atomic particles'!
Create a number of models of compounds using the molecular model kits. Students should make the compounds shown on page 134 (not DNA!!) of Science Probe 8.
Give hand out of common chemicals, and discuss their uses and structure.
Work on the Elements Project!
