PERIOD SEVEN - Science 8
Mixtures and Solutions and Separating Mixtures

It is expected that students will:

  1. Demo of "Touch Powder"

  2. Draw the "Matter Chart" on page152 of Science Probe 8, that describes how matter can be classified. Make sure that you write down the descriptions and examples also (shown in brackets under the boxes).

  3. Take notes on "How Chemists Classify Matter".

  4. Define mixtures and solutions and write down examples from the overhead in class.

  5. Go to page 150 of Science Probe 8, write down Table 6.8 into your book, and ADD three more rows to list your own six examples that demonstrate the difference between Mechanical Mixtures and Solutions.

  6. Brainstorm the ways that mixtures can be physically separated.

  7. Demo : Using a Funnel.

  8. Watch demo on separating Carbon Dioxide from pop.

  9. Do activity 7A in Science Probe 8. Fill out the worksheet and hand it in.

  10. Do activity 7G in Science Probe 8. You must come up with a procedure BEFORE you can start the experiment.
