Properties of Matter / Mass, Volume, Temp.

It is expected that students will:

• use a kinetic particle model to describe the structure and properties of various states of matter
• categorize a selection of materials as elements, compounds, or mixtures
• assess the properties of materials in terms of their effectiveness for particular uses
• relate the derivation of the symbols to the names of the elements
• give examples to show that the elements are grouped on the periodic table according to similar properties

3. Homework check of study sheet for the vocabulary we have just studied. All of the terms are listed in the Chapter Review on page 20 of Science Probe 8. Make sure that you put down the definition of the word AND at least ONE example.

5. We will finish notes on Matter

6. Take notes on the properties of matter

7. Apply our processing skill of observing to do these activities :

   • view 16 objects for 30 seconds, check memory

   • doing experiment 14 - observing elements

8. Apply our processing skill of classifying to do these activities :

   • write down 14 animals and classify them into four groups

   • classifying insects on the insect overhead

9. Take notes on mass, volume, and temperature.

10. Apply our processing skills of estimating, measuring and predicting to do these activities :

    • reading and using a triple beam balance

    • calculating the volume of a box, our classroom and an irregularily shaped object

    • reading a 'graduated cylinder' worksheet

    • reading a thermometer worksheet

    • do experiment three (measuring the melting and boiling point of water.
