Lesson Plan
Period #1 NUCLEAR ENERGY
Materials : Textbook : Physics - Principles and Problems
Review : Science 10 - Nuclear Energy Unit
Objectives : students should be able to :
- determine the make up of the atomic nucleus
- protons, neutrons,
- isotopes
- radioactive decay
- alpha, beta, gamma radiation
- write equations reflecting alpha, beta, and gamma radiation
Part I - Nuclear Energy - Introduction and Notes :
Give notes starting, "NUCLEAR ENERGY" page 3-1, describe the subatomic particles, isotopes and radioactivity.
Give notes starting "TYPES OF RADIATION", page 3-1, define and describe alpha, beta, and gamma radiation.
Guided Practice :
Go through examples of alpha, beta and gamma radiation equations on page 3-2, and Page 620, 621 or the text book.
Exercise :
Do questions 1 - 4 page 618 Practice Problems in Textbook
Do questions 5 - 8 page 621 Practice Problems in Textbook
Do questions 9 - 12 page 622 Practice Problems in Textbook
Evaluation :
Questions 9 - 12 page 622 Practice Problems in Textbook
Unit Three Exam
Part II - Nuclear Energy Research Project - Introduction
Use overhead of Nuclear Energy Research Project Topics to introduce the huge issues surrounding Nuclear Energy.
Have students choose a topic to write a research paper, and prepare a presentation to the class.
Go over criteria for the project and presentation (including self and peer evaluations)
Start project research in Library.
