While many Net users can post Web pages, putting up an effective Web page is more challenging. Your assignment will be to survey web sites and develop criteria for effective Web pages. What makes a good website, well you are going to decide that yourself! Then you will rate some web sites and see how they measure up to your standards!

Assignment :

1. Create a checklist of 5 essential characteristics of effective Web pages. Consider some of the following links

   • Google- Search for "what makes a good web page"
   • Web Crawler - Search for "what makes a good web page"
   • Web Page Design: Yale
   • Or....just do your own search for "Effective Web Pages", or "Web Design" or something similar

2. Pick a topic of personal interest (make sure the topic falls within the scope of the acceptable use policiy for the school). Find 10 sites on that topic and rate those sites from 1 - 10 and give a very short (1 or 2 sentences) critique on those sites based on the criteria you have already established.

3. Set up a grid similar to this in excel and save your assignment as effective.xls on your U:/ drive.

4. Our next assignment will be to use the criteria that you have set out for effective web pages, create a page about yourself, the school or the community (more info to come on this).

Evaluation

Your project will be evaluated according to how completely it demonstrates effective Web Page design, complete with the list of criteria and examples required. Look for imagination and creativity, as well as content and polish. How does your criteria compare with the criteria that the class has found, and those of Web experts?
