Downloading Files And Pictures From The Internet

Downloading A Picture

Many pictures that you find on the internet are free to be downloaded (or saved) onto a floppy disk or onto your computer.  Before downloading a picture, be sure to check for any copyrights or limitations that the author has put on its use.

1. Right click on the picture with your mouse, and you'll see a window that looks like Figure 1.

Fig. 1

2. Click on Save Image As and choose the location where you want to save it.

It is VERY important to remember where you saved the file - here in the lab, you should save it to your drive.

If the file ends in *.exe or *.zip, refer to the subsection entitled Downloading Files..

Downloading Files

Most web sites indicate that a file can be downloaded either by listing it as a link (i.e. it's underlined or changes color when you move your mouse over it) or with the word Download.  To download the file onto your computer or a diskette, either click on the link or click on the word Download and tell your browser where you want to save the file to.

If the file ends in a *.zip or *.exe refer to the subsection entitled Unzipping Files.

Unzipping Files

Files come in many different formats.  Some files, such as wallpaper or screen savers, are picture files and can be downloaded by following the instructions in the previous section.  Other files have to be installed on your computer.  These files usually end in *.exe or *.zip.

If you download a file, and it ends in *.zip, that means that the file has been compressed, either to decrease its download time or to allow the user to fit it on a diskette.  You can tell that a file has been zipped if its name ends in a *.zip.

To use one of these files, you have to unzip it.  To do that you need a utility program such as Winzip.  If you want a copy of Winzip on your personal computer, go to the WinZIP web site.

Once you have Winzip installed on your computer (make sure you have installed it in the WinZip wizard mode) and have downloaded the file you want to unzip, follow these steps:

1. Locate the file you want to unzip (it should have a *.zip extension) and double click on it.  That will display a window that has one or more files listed in it.

2. If there is a file such as install.exe or setup.exe, then you can install the program by double clicking on that file. If you're asked to install the software, click on Ok and follow the instructions on the screen, choosing the default answer anytime you're asked a question.

3.If you want to unzip the files, high light them and hit the "Extract" button.   If you're asked where you want to unzip the files to, decide where to save the files that are being unzipped.

Installing Executable Files

If you download a file, and it ends in *.exe, that means that the file is an executable file.  Executable files are files that install software on your computer..

To install an *.exe file on your computer, go to the Start menu and click on Run.  If you're not sure (or can't remember) where the file was saved, choose Browse and search through your folders until you locate it.  Then, once you've located the file, follow the instructions on your screen, choosing the default answer anytime you're asked a question.

Once your downloaded software has been installed, you can use it as you would any other software application.
