Period #4 Classification of Matter
Materials : Textbook : Chemistry - Nelson
Graphing hand out
Review : Go Over Lab Report for Investigation 1.2 Separating Matter
Go Over Questions 37-42 on pages 36, 37 and 45 of Nelson
Objectives : students should be able to :
1.15 classify a substance as solid, liquid, or gas, and describe its different properties
1.16 define boiling point, freezing point, and melting point
1.17 describe the simple molecular motions and arrangements for solids, liquids, and gases
1.18 relate the heat changes that occur during phase changes to changes in molecular motions and arrangements
Part I - Solids, Liquids, Gases & Cooling / Heating Curves - Notes :
Students hand in Lab on Separating Matter and Chromatography from last day
Give notes on Solids, Liquids and Gases, see notes staring at "SOLIDS, LIQUIDS, AND GASES", page 1-20 of notes.
Experiment 2A - Cooling and Heating Curves of a Pure Substance (Found in Heath on page 15)
- Students read over lab, and answer pre lab question from page 1-21 of notes
- students explain orally what they will be doing in the lab
- handout "Graphing" photocopy and discuss good graphing techniques.
- give procedural hints and discuss safety issues as on page 1-21 of notes
- students must prepare formal lab report (must include all headings)
- Answer ALL questions and Follow up questions
