Lesson Plan
Period #3 Classification of Matter
Materials : Textbook : Chemistry - Nelson
Marked Safety Quiz, Hoffman Apparatus
Review : Go over homework 31-34 page 34
Objectives : students should be able to :
1.13 describe the types of changes that may be observed when matter is heated, combined, or separated
1.14 differentiate between physical and chemical changes
1.15 classify a substance as solid, liquid, or gas, and describe its different properties
1.16 define boiling point, freezing point, and melting point
1.17 describe the simple molecular motions and arrangements for solids, liquids, and gases
1.18 relate the heat changes that occur during phase changes to changes in molecular motions and arrangements
Part I - Chemistry, Lab Reports & Classifying and Separating Matter - Notes :
Collect Observations for the Copper Lab from Last day, record into lab report.
Give notes on the definition of matter, physical/chemical change, starting at "MATTER", on page 1-15 of notes.
Classifying Matter
- discuss empirical classification of Matter, give notes starting "CLASSIFCATION OF MATTER", page 1-15 of notes.
- show overheads of matter classification page 1-16 of notes.
- differentiate between pure substances, and mixtures
Separating Matter
- discuss methods of separating matter, give notes starting "SEPARATION OF MATTER", on page 1-15 of notes.
- show overheads of matter separation, pages 1-17, 1-18 of notes.
- students should use pages 38-39 of Nelson and take notes on each method
Separating matter - Investigation 1.2 page 37 of Nelson
- salt, sand, iron powder, lead shot
- students write and carry out experimental design
- do experimental design, materials, procedure, evidence, analysis
Exercise :
Questions 37-38 on pages 36, 37 of Nelson
Lab Report - Separating Matter
Questions 39-42 on page 45 of Nelson
Evaluation :

Unit One Exam
Part II - Pure Substances - Introduction and Notes
Investigation 1.3 - Paper Chromatography
- introduce lab by giving notes starting "CHROMATOGRAPHY", on page 1-19 of notes.
- students do lab - responsible for Formal Lab Write Up
Demonstration - breakdown of a compound to form elements - Hoffmann Apparatus - The electrolysis of Water
Prepare for Experiment 2A - Cooling and Heating Curves of a Pure Substance (Found in Heath on page 15)
- students read over lab
- students explain orally what they will be doing in the lab
- prepare formal lab report. (must include all headings)
- students can prepare up to "Data and Observations" section
- students must bring graph paper next class
