Lesson Plan
Period #1 Lab Safety
Materials : Textbook : Chemistry - Nelson
Course Outline / Evaluation, Map of Room 110, Safety Equipment
Review :
Objectives : students should be able to :
1.1 list the safety and protective equipment available in the laboratory
1.2 describe how and when to use each piece of equipment
1.3 indicate on a school map the location of the nearest fire alarm and appropriate fire exits
1.4 list sources of first-aid assistance other than the classroom teacher
1.5 describe common chemistry laboratory hazards
1.6 describe the appropriate procedure or technique for dealing with particular hazards
1.7 produce a list of general rules of safe laboratory conduct
1.8 display a conscious safety attitude in the laboratory
Part I - Laboratory Safety - Introduction and Notes :
Have students spot the hazards on overhead sheet, page 1-1, and discuss the proper techniques that should be used.
Demo - get out safety equipment in lab, explain and discuss proper use
- safety glasses = shower
- aprons = 1st aid kit
- fire extinguisher = fire blanket
- eye wash
Map - hand out and label map of room 110, and outer hallways, with the following
- fire alarm
- fire exits
- name of 1st aid attendants
- fire extinguisher
- shower
- fire blanket
- eye wash
Lab Hazards
- students divide into groups and each group researches the following lab hazards page 747 of Nelson and presents to the class
a) glass safety and cuts d) fire safety
b) bums e) electrical safety
c) eye safety f) chemical spills
Make any additions necessary (use pages 1-2 to 1-4 as a guide) as students present their notes to the class.
Safety Rules
- students divide into different groups and each group devises a set of safety rules that should be followed in the lab
- go over as a large group, record on board, discuss, make additions of missed rules (see page 749 of Nelson, and page 1-5 of notes)
- students copy final version into notebooks
Exercise :
Evaluation :
Safety Quiz
Unit One Exam
Part II - Good Lab Techniques & WHMIS - Introduction and Notes
Introduce Good Lab Techniques
- see backside of map photocopy , go over
- demonstrate the proper techniques for odors, pipets, heating test tubes, pouring liquids.
- also show the overhead of "Laboratory Equipment", page 1-6 for a quick review.
Introduce WHMIS
- explain what WHMIS is, give brief notes see page 1-6-1
- read out the WHMIS Material Safety Data sheets for Ethanol (ethyl alcohol)
- show and explain symbols on overhead from page 1-7
- give photocopied handout of WHMIS labels with MSDS examples on back
- show labels on bottles of chemicals
- methanol, HCl, NaCl, NaOH
Remind students of a Quiz next Class on Laboratory Safety.
