Materials : Textbook : Chemistry - Nelson

Review : Practice problems page 2-10, 2-16, 2-22

Objectives : students should be able to :

2.7 name the ionic compound from a formula, and write the formula given a name

2.7.1 binary compounds

2.7.2 monotomic ions

2.7.3 multivalent metal ions

2.7.4 polyatomic ions

Part I - Naming Ionic Compounds - Introduction and Notes :

Review the two exceptions on page 2-23 of notes on Certain Formulas you never reduce.

Hand out sheet of polyatomic ions

Give notes starting "BINARY COMPOUNDS OF MULTIVALENT CATIONS", on page 2-14 to explain how to write the name given the formula.

Go through examples on page 2-25 writing formula from names.

Do practice problems on page 2-27

Give notes starting "COMPOUNDS INVOLVING POLYATOMIC IONS", on page 2-18 to explain how to write the formula given the name.

Go through examples on page 2-29 writing names from formula

Do practice problems on page 2-30
